An Eye for News Chapter 22

“Who said I’m crying, it’s the rain and get
away from me! My phone’s dead, I can’t call a car now if I want to.”

Xin Yu used her bag to shove Se Cai
who moved in to console her back. She huffed angrily, “Driver, drive me to XY
Residence!”

Se Cai was familiar with XY
Residence, it was a high-scale residential area for the county’s rich and
famous. In other words, a place he wouldn’t be stepping into in his lifetime.

“Yes, miss. Then, what about you,
sir?”

The driver frowned as he
gestured at Se Cai.

“Drop her off first, my house’s
a bit further away.”

Se Cai said in a voice as
lecherous as he could muster, “Pretty lady, don’t worry, I’ll see you home. We
wouldn’t want a pretty little thing like yourself to get wet from the rain,
would we?”

“F*ck, your place is obviously
closer because I know you rent a house near the tv station!”

Xin Yu finally lost her patience
and cursed.

Perhaps it was her years of
diction training, her cursing didn’t sound coa.r.s.e, instead Se Cai found it to
be quite melodic.

“Man, let’s cut to the chase. She’s obviously
way out of your league and not interested. Why not be a gentleman and let the
lady go?”

The driver advised. His target
was Xin Yu so it would serve him well if he could get Se Cai to voluntarily
leave.

“Yes, Se Cai, listen to the kind
sir. I am really NOT interested.”

Xin Yu declared as she pulled
from her bag a small eyebrow knife that she waved in front of her as a form of
defense.

“You think I would be interested
in a dumb woman like yourself?”

Se Cai snorted in anger. The
woman was as thick as a brick. If he departed, she would be left to the villainous
driver’s device.

“Who are you calling dumb?”

Xin Yu’s fear was overwhelmed by
anger from being insulted.

Xin Yu was used to people
treating her on the basis on her looks so she took perhaps a little too much
pride in her intellect.

“Alright, alright. Cut it out,
you two. We’re moving!”

The man seemed to have reached
the end of his patience and pressed down hard on the oil pedal.

The car lurched violently
forward, throwing its pa.s.senger back.

“Driver sir, can you drive a bit
more carefully…”

A nervous Xin Yu implored as she
fastened the backseat seat belt.

Se Cai though was worried about
something else.

He noticed the car was heading
not towards XY Residence but Blue Sky Rehab.

“Driver sir, why are you taking
this route?” he asked in a rushed manner.

“It’s because of the rain. You
know the county’s drainage system has always been bad. The normal route must
have flooded already… So I’m taking the long route, don’t worry, I won’t charge
extra.” The man smiled in response.

Xin Yu might not be familiar
with County S’ landscape but Se Cai knew that they were heading outside of the
city area. It was easier to dispose of them in a secluded part of the county.

As the city lights retreated
further and further away, Se Cai hurriedly sent off a SOS text to his housemate
Gao Xiang.

“Gao Xiang, Zhang Xin Yu and
myself are kidnapped by an armed man. The car plate is PL0523. I suspect this
is a trap set by the Blue Sky Rehab people because we’re heading towards the
school compound northern side of town. Please call the police for us!”

Se Cai sneaked a glance at the
driver through the rearview mirror. While the driver wasn’t looking, he tried
to catch Xin Yu’s eyes, trying to notify her of the danger they were in.

When Xin Yu didn’t respond, he
whispered, “Xin Yu, can you give me your phone number?”

He handed her his phone and it
showed the message he just sent Gao Xiang.

“In your dreams!”

Xin Yu said condescendingly. She
didn’t even turn her head his way.

“Gah! F*ck me! I’m going die
because of this woman!”

Se Cai cursed inwardly, meaning
to shove the phone in her face.

However, he didn’t dare to do so
because he noticed the driver started to gaze their way with suspicion in his
eyes.

Se Cai took a deep breath and
tried to come up with a new plan.

“h.e.l.lo… yes… we’re almost there…”

The driver answered his phone
and only snippets of the conversation floated to the back because he was
cautious to not let the pa.s.sengers overhear him.

This call made Se Cai even more
nervous because it confirmed the presence of possible multiple partners. If
they wanted to get away, they needed to do it in the car while they still had
the number’s advantage.

Se Cai surrept.i.tiously scanned
the car’s interior. His gaze landed on his broken umbrella and an idea popped
into his mind.

Se Cai put on his seatbelt and
leaned forward to ask, “Erm, driver sir, why doesn’t your phone show the Uber
app?”

The man replied, “Oh, yes, sorry
I forgot.”

It was clear to Se Cai that the
man wasn’t a real Uber driver because of that obvious mistake and the fact that
the man wasn’t even wearing his seat belt.

The man decelerated to search
for the app.

In that moment, with a swift movement, Se Cai
reached forward to pull the hand brake. Before the driver could react, Se Cai
grabbed one the umbrella skeletal frames he had untangled and jammed it into
the man’s leg!

The car skidded on the wet tarmac
floor and veered off the road into a patch of wildflowers field.

Shocked by the sudden pain, the
driver’s phone fell from his hand and he flew right into the windshield because
he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. He screamed in pain.

“We got to go!”

Se Cai roared after disengaging
from his seatbelt. He grabbed Xin Yu and made to leap out the car.

The rain was still falling,
creating a muddy swamp land out of the countryside field. However, it was still
better than waiting for the driver’s partners to come.

“What are you doing!”

Xin Yu screamed and she instinctually
moved out of Se Cai’s grabbing hands.

Se Cai didn’t have the time to
explain. He eventually latched onto her hands and they both went tumbling out into
the rain.

“Help… Someone help me!”

Being forcefully pulled from the
car, the panicked Xin Yu screeched.

“Shhh… Ouch!”

Se Cai was about to explain everything
when he felt something sharp stabbed his arm. He immediately retracted his
hands.

With his enhanced vision, he saw
Xin Yu’s eyebrow knife glinting in the dark.

“d.a.m.n, why did you do that for!”

Se Cai rubbed the wound on his
arm and said disgruntledly.

He was trying to save their
lives and this was the thanks he got?!

“You mean to hurt the driver and
take advantage of me in this wilderness, don’t you!”

Xin Yu held the small knife with shaking hands in front of her. She stared at Se Cai with fear in her eyes.

“What are you talking about!
Listen to me…”

Se Cai s.n.a.t.c.hed the knife from
her hands and tried to knock some sense into her hand when the car’s headlights
turned back on, catching Se Cai in it.

The driver had regained his
consciousness and was shuffling towards them with unsteady steps.

“Driver sir, help me! This man
here is trying to rape me!”

Xin Yu’s face lit up when she
saw the driver, and she started to take small steps towards him and the safety
of his car.

The driver lost his baseball in
the car crash and his bald head was bleeding from injuries suffered when he
rammed into the windshield. The blood mixed with the rain and painted his face,
making him looked especially vicious.

The most serious wound though
was on his leg, the one inflicted by Se Cai.

He didn’t look exactly like a
knight in shining armor but in Xin Yu’s eyes, he was one because he was going
to save her from the s.e.xual predator, Se Cai.

However, when she got closer to
the driver, he chuckled darkly before pulling her into his tight grasp. His
other hand pulled out a black object.

“Wait, don’t shoot!”

Se Cai yelled and put his hands
up in surrender when the driver pointed his gun at him.

His plan was to lead Xin Yu away
from the driver because he knew from his mind-reading skill that he was armed.

He knew they couldn’t outrun a
bullet but they had a running lead. Plus, the driver couldn’t see in the dark. They
had a good chance at an escape.

Zhang Xin Yu though had ruined
that completely. Not only that, she practically delivered herself to the enemy.

“You there, don’t move a muscle
or I’ll blow your brains out!”

One of the driver’s eyes was
swollen shut by his injuries but the hand that held the gun was firm. Se Cai
believed this man was familiar with handling firearms.

“Gun… why do you have a gun?”

Xin Yu was as white as a sheet
of paper, but it was unsure whether it was fear or the cold.

“Do you still not get it? He’s
here to kidnap you but you still treat him as the good guy.”

Se Cai glared at her and said dejectedly.
