We found the decaying bodies of the guards and their bloodstains on the gra.s.s. We walked a little farther and came upon the village, but every building was burned to the ground. A pile of bodies sat in the middle with the banner of Miniro on top. Every single man, woman, and child was dead. I gasped at the sight of it. The other guards must've come looking for the others and burned down the village in revenge. I felt tears well in my eyes. I dropped to my knees and cried in my hands. Charles placed his hand on my back and dropped down next to me. I buried my head in his chest and sobbed. He brushed his hand through my hair."Why did I come here? This is all my fault. If I didn't show up here, none of this would've happened..." I said, still sobbing."This isn't your fault Akila, none of this is," Charles said to me."We should bury their bodies," I said looking up.
"I'll do it. You go and rest. You need it after last night."I stood back up, still crying, and found a tree to sit by. I watched as Charles found a surviving shovel and started to dig a big enough hole to bury each body. He laid them down one by one. By the afternoon Charles had covered the grave and had sat down on the other side of the tree. He sighed and wiped the sweat from his brow.
