Prologue.
Whats wrong, Ann? You cant sleep?
Its okay. There are days like that.
Well then, how about Mama tells you an old story. Its a tale
that originated from the Highland kingdom: a story about fairies.
Thats right, fairies; those people with thin wings on their backs.
These children are forced to work under the houses of the
wealthy. Youve seen them before, right?
Come on, hurry up and wrap yourself in the blanket. Thats it,
youre a good kid. Well then, lets start.
A long, long time ago, when people didnt yet known to use fire,
there existed a kingdom. This realm was the country of fairies.
There was a fairy king, and the fairies who served under that
king lived in peace.
The fairies kingdom was called Highland. It was considered to
be the "country who stood on top" of all other living creatures.
Soon after, the fairies, which had wisdom and power that no
human had, were enslaved.
Yes, thats right.
Today, humankind is using fairies as slaves. But, long ago, it
was the opposite. The fairies used to rule over mankind.

The fairies loved peace. They had always pursued beautiful and
fun things.
No matter how many years had pa.s.sed, the fairies never changed,
living gently like that.
But humans are different. They evolved.
With some effort, humans learned how to use fire. They gained
wisdom as well. And so, humankind, at last began to realize that
they didnt need fairies to govern them.
Its been five hundred years since.
The humans revolted, and Highland came into mens hands.
Now, the fairies have become humankinds servants.
Eh? Yes, youre right.
The fairies now are pitiful. The people of this world say that
because fairies "were only playing around and lost to the
humans, theyre stupid creatures." But, Mama doesnt agree.
Fairies were fewer compared to humans, and I think thats why
the fairies lost against them.
Why, you ask? Well, you see, the ones who found a way to
refine the silver sugar from the sugar apples were the fairies.
And the worlds first sugar candies were also made by fairies.
People who make such wonderful things cant be stupid. Thats
why, even if its only us candy craftsmen, we mustnt scorn
fairies.
